The Courage to Take Chances

During Kairos Academies' 5th Annual 8th Grade Promotion Ceremony, valedictorian Jade Howard shared a message that perfectly captured both the excitement and uncertainty that comes with stepping into something new.
Reflecting on a quote from the artist Drake, Jade told her classmates:
"A picture captures moments that can never be repeated and opportunities are often the same way. If we hesitate too long, we might miss out on something great. As we move on to high school and beyond, I hope we have the courage to take chances and try new things and believe in ourselves even when the outcome is uncertain." -Jade, 8th Grade Valedictorian
Those words stayed with us long after the ceremony ended.
Because the truth is that courage rarely appears out of nowhere.
Students develop the courage to take chances when they know someone believes in them. They take risks when they have adults who know their strengths, understand their challenges, and remind them what they're capable of becoming. They push past their limits when they have opportunities to practice solving problems, leading teams, asking questions, and learning from mistakes.
At Kairos, that is exactly what we are trying to build.
Courage Begins with Relationships
Before students can dream boldly about the future, they need to know that they belong.
This past year, Kairos students ranked in the top 1% nationally for student sense of belonging on the Panorama Survey. That result reflects something our community has always believed: students thrive when they are known deeply.
Our 1:1 mentoring model is one of the ways we bring that belief to life. Every student has an adult in the building whose job is not only to support their academic growth, but also to help them navigate challenges, celebrate victories, and build a vision for the future.
Courage Grows through Doing
Taking chances requires practice.
That is why Kairos students learn through projects, collaboration, presentations, and real-world experiences that ask them to apply their learning rather than simply memorize information.
Hands-on learning gives students opportunities to fail safely, revise their thinking, and try again. Over time, students begin to see challenges differently. Instead of asking, "What if I fail?" they begin asking, "What can I learn?" and "How can I improve?"
That mindset is the foundation of student agency.
Our goal is not to create students who wait for adults to tell them what comes next. Our goal is to develop young people who can identify problems, advocate for themselves, make decisions, and shape the direction of their own lives.
Courage Needs a Destination
Taking chances matters most when students can see where those opportunities might lead.
At Kairos, we believe every student should graduate with a concrete next step and a plan for the future they want to pursue.
For some students, that future includes college. For others, it includes apprenticeships, certifications, internships, military service, or entering the workforce with valuable skills and experiences already in hand.
This year, our founding senior class celebrated a remarkable milestone as they graduated and prepared for their next chapters. Kairos graduates earned acceptance to more than 65 colleges and universities across the country, while others pursued career pathways aligned to their goals and interests.
Programs like Next Prep help students connect their learning to life after high school through opportunities such as internships, OSHA 10 certification, and partnerships that expose students to meaningful career pathways.
Because success after high school should never be left to chance.
The Opportunity in Front of Us
Jade's message was meant for her classmates as they prepared to begin high school.
But it feels just as relevant for all of us.
Opportunities rarely arrive when we feel completely ready for them. Growth often requires stepping into uncertainty and trusting that we can figure things out along the way.
Our job as educators is not to remove every obstacle from our students' paths.
Our job is to ensure they have the confidence, skills, relationships, and support systems necessary to move forward anyway.
The courage to take chances.
The confidence to believe in themselves.
The agency to shape their own futures.
Those are not just lessons from an 8th grade promotion speech. They are the work of Kairos Academies every single day.
