The Kairos Experience: From First-Day Nerves to Futures Filled With Purpose

What happens when a school sees your child not just for who they are today, but for who they could become?

At Kairos Academies, we believe students thrive when they are deeply known, challenged, and supported. Located in south St. Louis city, Kairos is a free public charter school designed to help students discover purpose, build confidence, and prepare for lives full of opportunity and choice.

For students like Monika and Gabriel, the Kairos experience became more than just middle school and high school. It became the place where they found mentors, explored their passions, prepared for college and careers, and began shaping the futures they dreamed about for themselves and their families.

Below, we’re breaking down their journeys into moments that show what the Kairos experience can look like for your child.

The Kairos Experience Starts with Belonging

Starting at a new school can be intimidating. Monika still remembers walking into Kairos feeling nervous and unsure about what to expect.

But by the end of the day, something had changed.

She left excited to tell her parents about her experience — about the kindness she felt, the relationships she began building, and the sense that this was a place where people genuinely cared about her.

That feeling matters. At Kairos, relationships are not an extra feature of school — they are the foundation of everything we do.

For many families in St. Louis, school can feel transactional or impersonal. We believe students deserve something different: a school community where they are seen, valued, and encouraged from day one.

Learning That Doesn't Feel Traditional

Gabriel remembers one of the first projects that made him realize Kairos was different.

Instead of simply reading about history in a textbook, students used Minecraft to explore the history and structure of the Roman Colosseum. Learning became immersive, creative, and hands-on.

For Gabriel, it sparked curiosity in a way traditional classrooms hadn’t before.

At Kairos, we believe students learn best when they can actively engage with ideas, ask questions, build projects, solve problems, and connect learning to the real world. Whether students are conducting experiments, designing presentations, creating art, or exploring career pathways, learning becomes something they experience — not just something they memorize.

Every Student Has "Their Person"

When High School Principal Ms. Nduka first learned about Kairos’ 1:1 mentoring model, she immediately understood how powerful it could be for students.

Every Kairos student is paired with a mentor — their own “personal person” — someone who walks alongside them throughout their journey.

That mentor helps students navigate challenges, set goals, celebrate growth, and connect opportunities to their individual strengths and interests.

These relationships create the kind of trust that helps students take risks, grow in confidence, and imagine bigger futures for themselves.

Because when students know someone is fully invested in their success, everything changes.

Preparing Students for What Comes Next

Monika’s passion for film wasn’t treated as a distraction from schoolwork. It became the foundation for deeper learning.

Through mentorship and personalized projects, Ms. Willis helped Monika design a film-focused research project that challenged her to think critically, conduct college-level research, and sharpen her communication skills.

Experiences like this help students build real academic confidence before they ever step onto a college campus.

At Kairos, personalization means students don’t have to choose between their interests and their education. The two work together.

Helping Students Discover Their Future

Through Kairos’ Next Prep program, Gabriel explored his goals, values, and future career interests long before graduation.

Programs like Next Prep allow students to “test drive” potential futures through career exploration, internships, mentorship, and real-world experiences.

As Kairos co-founder Jack Krewson reflects in the video, many adults never had this level of clarity about their future while in high school. Giving students opportunities to explore purpose early can transform the direction of their lives.

For Gabriel, those experiences helped strengthen his passion for aerospace engineering and applied physics — and gave him confidence in the future he wanted to pursue.

Teachers Empowered to Dream Bigger

Great schools trust great teachers.

At Kairos, educators are empowered to create experiences that truly meet students’ needs — academically, socially, and emotionally.

Ms. Willis describes the freedom she feels to dream big for students and design opportunities that help move the needle in meaningful ways.

That flexibility matters because no two students are exactly alike.

Deep relationships allow teachers to identify what motivates students, what challenges them, and what kinds of experiences can unlock growth and confidence.

Celebrating Life-Changing Moments

A Moment I'll Never Forget

One of the most emotional moments in Monika’s journey came when she received her full-ride acceptance to Washington University in St. Louis to study film and media.

In the video, her mother reflects on what that moment meant for their family — the pride, joy, and possibility wrapped into a single acceptance letter.

Moments like these remind us why opportunity matters.

Students across St. Louis deserve access to schools that help them compete for life-changing opportunities, regardless of their ZIP code.

From Kairos to Morehouse

Gabriel’s hard work and growth led to acceptance letters from Morehouse College and Georgia Institute of Technology.

His mother speaks powerfully about watching him grow into a young man capable of making independent decisions and pursuing his dreams with purpose and discipline.

These outcomes are not accidents. They are the result of years of mentorship, challenge, encouragement, and opportunity.

Building Lives of Purpose

This Is Why We're Here

For Ms. Willis, education is bigger than grades and transcripts.

She describes Kairos as a tool for empowerment — a place where students learn to advocate for themselves, support their communities, and become leaders capable of making St. Louis better.

That mission shapes everything we do.

Monika's Purpose

Monika hopes to use her education and creative voice to create art that unifies and inspires people.

Her story is a reminder that education should help students discover not only what they want to do, but who they want to become.

Becoming a Man of Purpose

Gabriel speaks about wanting to solve meaningful problems, contribute to the world through science and engineering, and create generational opportunity for his family.

At Kairos, students are encouraged to dream boldly — and given the support, mentorship, and preparation needed to pursue those dreams with confidence.

Prepared for Whatever Comes Next

Success does not look the same for every student.

Some Kairos graduates attend elite colleges and universities. Others pursue certifications, community college programs, military service, or direct-entry careers.

What matters most is that students graduate prepared to lead independent lives full of purpose, agency, and choice.

That is the heart of the Kairos experience.
