What career could you see yourself in? Does it require college? Specialty classes? An apprenticeship? What does it actually pay? Most high schoolers are still working out the answers, and that's okay. At Kairos Academies, we believe the best way to answer those questions is to leave the classroom and go find out. That's why our Next Prep team recently took high school students to the Mid-America Carpenters Apprenticeship Training Center in Afton.

etting their hands dirty (literally) and exploring what's next. Kairos high schoolers just wrapped up a Next Prep field trip to Heru Urban Farming–an urban farm bringing organic, locally grown produce to St. Louis. The day gave students something a classroom alone can't: real, hands-on career exploration alongside working professionals in agriculture, culinary arts, and community engagement.

For many families, the question of what comes after high school can feel a long way off. At Kairos, we believe students can start answering that question long before graduation. For Kairos senior Deshawn Frazier, that journey has taken him from career exploration workshops in 9th grade to a paid internship in engineering and precision machining today–with an apprenticeship on the horizon after graduation.

The first week of school is often about new routines, new teachers, and getting settled. At Kairos, it’s also about getting started. Just days into the new school year, students are already diving into meaningful, grade-level learning. They’re asking questions, exploring new ideas, working independently, and coming together for thoughtful discussions. At our St. Louis middle school, we believe students shouldn’t have to wait weeks for meaningful learning to begin.

Monday, August 17 is more than just the first day. Students will begin building relationships, learning expectations, connecting with their mentors and teachers, and setting the tone for the school year ahead. We need every Kraken here and ready to learn.
