A St. Louis Middle School Where Learning Starts on Day One

The first week of school is often about new routines, new teachers, and getting settled.
At Kairos, it’s also about getting started.
Just days into the new school year, students are already diving into meaningful, grade-level learning. They’re asking questions, exploring new ideas, working independently, and coming together for thoughtful discussions.
At our St. Louis middle school, we believe students shouldn’t have to wait weeks for meaningful learning to begin.
Take Ms. Franjic’s 8th grade English class.
Students have already begun a unit on folklore, exploring the stories people tell and what those stories can teach us about culture, values, and the world around us. Each student selected a piece of folklore to research and is discovering the characters, themes, and history behind these stories.
Iyanna is researching Paul Bunyan, the legendary lumberjack known for his giant size and incredible feats of strength.
Zu’Rell is studying the story of King Arthur, including the famous sword in the stone.
And Ziy’La is researching Maria Makiling, a figure from Filipino folklore whose emotions were said to move the forests around her. One detail especially stood out to Ziy’La: “I thought it was very cool that they thought her spirit was still alive in the mountains.”
Meaingful Learning at our St. Louis Middle School
These are more than facts for students to memorize.
They are opportunities to practice researching, asking questions, making connections, and sharing what they learn with others. Soon, students will build on this work as they come together to read and discuss Summer of the Mariposas, a Mexican-American story inspired by Homer’s The Odyssey.
This is what the start of the school year looks like at Kairos.
Yes, students are building relationships. They’re learning new routines and getting to know their teachers and classmates. But they’re also being challenged from day one.
We believe students are capable of meaningful work, deep thinking, and engaging conversations. We set a high bar because we know our students can reach it—with the right support, encouragement, and opportunities to grow.
For our current families, this is just the beginning of another year of learning and discovery.
