Proving the Model
Individual classrooms have been piloting Kairos for years, with amazing results. So when we forecasted our school performance, we set a high bar—the most ambitious goals in St. Louis. Before accepting, the government asked for proof. To open, we'd have to show that we could prepare 100% of students for college and career.
In Summer 2018, Kairos partnered with Aim High St. Louis to run a 6-week summer school with 60 students. We worked with Transcend Education, Summit Research & Development, and seven data collectors to plan a rigorous research plan that would study the student experience. What would happen if kids were given ownership of their education? And how could we empower them to manage it?
With their coach, students set personalized growth goals and determine their level of choice over where, when, and how they study.
Students work on their goals using coursework that adjusts to meet their unique needs and strengths. Teachers tutor students 1-1.
At the end of learning cycle, students reflect on their study habits, earn more choice (if they met goals), and plan how to improve next time.

"I love when I hit a growth goal! I know that I learned, and I'm happy that I get to do more things, like study on the couch. I feel like I can make more decisions for myself now."
